I was addicted to OxyContin for over five years. I used methadone to taper down and relieve withdrawal symptoms. I was up to 360 mg per day of oxycodone. Once I was stable on methadone, at a dose of 20 mg daily, I had my doc switch me to Suboxone to finish off. The Suboxone worked fine. As far as a timeline, I was on the methadone for a few, maybe three months. I began to worry about withdrawal from it, which was when I switched to Suboxone. I started with 8 mg, and tapered down to zero over three more months. I suffered only slight discomfort. Nothing unmanagable. Most of it was mental, not physical. I would say Suboxone was a life saver for me. The only down side was the cost! It was so expensive, it broke me financially. I did this whole treatment with my credit card, no insurance. I would encourage anyone that is considering detoxing with Suboxone to go for it. Try to avoid the methadone, as it can be even more painful than the opiates themselves to withdrawal from. Good luck to all seeking a way out!
